Full list of high street stores closing in 2025 including WHSmith and Homebase

High street chains including and The Entertainer are shutting more stores next year.

An estimated 8,543 retail stores in the closed throughout 2024, according to the Centre for Retail Research. This is largely due to people having less money to spend, following a sharp rise in bills during the cost of living crisis, as well as higher rents and costs for retailers.

Some businesses have already sounded the alarm over costs for next year, after Chancellor confirmed a hike in the amount costs. We've rounded up all the shops that are set to close so far in 2025.

WHSmith

WHSmith is closing its Winton branch in Bournemouth, Dorset, on February 15 - but it's not all bad news. The retailer announced earlier this year that it plans to open around 110 new stores in airports, railway stations and , as it focuses on its travel division. On top of this, WHSmith is also opening 37 new Toys R Us concessions inside WH Smith stores. WHSmith has over 1,100 UK stores.

The Entertainer

The Entertainer is closing its store at the Cameron Toll shopping centre in Edinburgh on January 4. However, the toy retailer has set its sights on expanding globally, and has rolled out more than 850 brand-new toy shops inside stores. The Entertainer has more than 160 stores in the UK.

Homebase

Homebase will close stores in Derry/Londonderry, Inverurie, Omagh and Fife in the new year. It comes after the DIY retailer collapsed into administration, with the majority of its stores going on to be sold to retail group CDS, which also owns The Range. The deal included 1,600 jobs and 70 stores.

Co-op

Central has announced it will close 19 stores across middle England. Central Co-op is part of the wider Co-operative Group. Three of stores that are closing will reopen as B&M branches, while the remaining 16 are being sold to independent convenience store chain Samy. Samy currently runs 32 Budgens, Spar, Londis and Premier stores across the UK. All 19 shops will change hands by the end of May 2025.

Monki

Monki, which is owned by H&M, is closing its seven UK stores next year. Its branch inside Intu Eldon Square in Newcastle upon Tyne will close on January 2, then its Manchester Arndale store will follow on January 17. H&M has said a "limited number" of Monki branches will merge with another of its fashion brands, Weekday.

Millets

Millets is closing six stores in early 2025. Four of these branches in Lowestoft, Douglas, York and Grimsby will be rebranded as Go Outdoors sites, a sister brand to Millets. Millets has around 100 stores in the UK.
