Thai authorities have seized the assets of Boon Vanasin a former doctor turned businessman who allegedly fled the country after receiving over 12 billion Baht ($350 million) from various investors in connection with fake medical projects. Boon Vanasin has been facing multiple fraud charges and money laundering complaints since December 2023. According to Bloomberg Vanasin allegedly lured investors by encouraging them to invest in five medical projects across Thailand Laos and Vietnam none of which existed on the ground. Know who is Boon Vanasin Boon Vanasin is 86-year-old and the founder of Thonburi Healthcare Group. He was born in a family that had a business of rice and other agricultural goods. He earned his bachelor degree in medicine from Mahidol University.  According to a local Thani media report he also attended John Hopkins University in the US to learn specialization in gastrointestinal medicine.  He returned from the US and started his career with Mahidol University by teaching medical students. Later he was promoted to the post of director.  Boon Vanasin established Thonburi Healthcare Co Ltd with an aim to serve the residents of Bangkok who live on the west side of Chao Phraya River.  During the Covid pandemic He promised people that his hospital would receive 20 million doses of Pfizer mRNA vaccine but none of them had been administered. The nation’s Security and Exchange Commission has asked Vanasin to pay a fine of 2.3 million Baht for making false claims. The commission also restricted him to serve as director or an executive in a company.  Apart from this he was allegedly involved in the Alpine golf Course Scandal which was a controversial land deal issue.  In the fraud and money laundering case Vanasin’s wife  Charuvarn Vanasin and daughter Nalin Vanasin are in the custody of the court. They denied all charges. As per Bloomberg report they claimed that the signatures are forged on the fake document projects.  The Department of Special Investigation in Thailand is probing into the allegations levelled against Boon Vanasin. The authorities have made an arrest in the case and 13 people have been apprehended including Vanasin’s wife and daughter.
