Australia will concentrate on a two-Test away trip to Sri Lanka later this month after defeating India 3-1 in the five-Test series and earning a final position in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Sam Konstas, who played in the last two Test matches against India and made a half-century on his debut for his country, was the perfect partner for Usman Khawaja when opener David Warner retired.
Matt Renshaw, Cameron Bancroft, Marcus Harris, Nathan McSweeney, and Konstas were all mentioned as possible opening alternatives before the commencement of the series against India. Only McSweeney and Konstas, however, were given the chance to participate in the series.
According to Matthew Renshaw, he was passed over for the position of Australia Test opener. But because of his prior red-ball experience in the subcontinent, he hopes to be selected ahead of others as the Sri Lanka tour selection draws closer.
“I doubt I would claim that I became enmeshed in the opening race. I don’t believe I had anything to do with that,” Renshaw told SEN Mornings.
“I’m definitely further away than some of the lads (to be chosen), but I’ve taken most of my examinations in Asia, so I have some experience there in case I’m needed.
“I’ve been enjoying myself immensely as I’ve tried to play cricket the way I want to. (I’m) feeling great about my cricket and the way I’m batting right now. Of course, I have goals, but for now, I’m just enjoying it.
Renshaw feels that no player can open, and if he were to rejoin the Australian Test team, it would be his favorite position while the team’s future is being discussed.
“Opening is one of the hardest positions in the world of sports and a specialized role. You can know it’s challenging if Steve Smith reaches the top and doesn’t get the experience he desires. If given the chance, I think I could bat anyplace, but I’ll continue to open for Queensland as I get the greatest joy from seeing you win,” he said.
Australia and Sri Lanka will play their first Test match in Galle starting on January 29.
