, who are familiar with the technology from their and Champions League games, will face Spurs in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal on Wednesday. They're hoping to secure a spot in the final alongside either Arsenal or Newcastle.
Liverpool previously claimed a 6-3 victory over in the Premier League in December and are aiming for a similar outcome in London. In that Premier League match, VAR was used as it is in all top-flight games. However, this hasn't been the case for the Carabao Cup until the semifinal stage. VAR wasn't utilised in any of Liverpool's previous wins in the competition against West Ham, Brighton or Southampton.

With its introduction at the semifinal stage, there will be notable changes to how VAR is used. For the first time in English soccer, VAR announcements will be broadcast over the stadium's public address system for fans to hear, including when the referee consults the pitch-side monitor.
Only the final decision made by the referee after VAR intervention will be announced for fans in the stadium to hear. This will include decisions on penalties being awarded, red cards and handball, among others.
The new use of VAR is part of a trial that is being implemented by the PGMOL in collaboration with the EFL. It was during the 2018/19 season that VAR was first introduced in English soccer in the Carabao Cup - also known as the League Cup - before being used in the Premier League the following season.
