New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released satellite images revealing the extensive damage caused by the 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday, shaking neighboring countries as well.
Using its advanced Earth imaging satellite, Cartosat-3, which captures images with a resolution of less than 50 centimeters, ISRO has obtained detailed photos from an altitude of 500 kilometers. The images reveal the collapse of a massive bridge over the Irrawaddy River, significant damage to Mandalay University, and the destruction of the Ananda Pagoda.

According to ISRO, Cartosat-3, launched in 2019, is a third-generation agile and advanced Earth imaging satellite. The space agency rarely releases images from this highly sophisticated satellite.

The National Remote Sensing Centre, a division of ISRO, reported that post-disaster imagery from Cartosat-3 was captured on Saturday over the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing in Myanmar.
A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday, followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock. The epicenter was located at a depth of 10 km near the Sagaing-Mandalay border. Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, suffered severe damage.
The earthquake also shook Myanmar’s capital, Naypyidaw, and several other regions, causing the collapse of infrastructure, roads, and residential buildings. Tremors were felt beyond Myanmar, reaching neighboring countries and even as far as Chiang Mai and northern Thailand, where some areas also reported damage.
The images revealed extensive infrastructure damage in Mandalay, with major landmarks such as Sky Villa, Phayani Pagoda, Mahamuni Pagoda, Ananda Pagoda, and the University of Mandalay sustaining either partial or complete destruction.
