ISKCON’s big action amid egg vs vegetarianism controversy in mid-day meal in Bengal, Vice President Radharaman Das removed

in west bengal Following the controversy over serving vegetarian food instead of eggs in the mid-day meal, ISKCON has removed its vice president Radharaman Das from all departments in Kolkata. They have also been directed not to speak or represent ISKCON in the media, government officials or in any public forum. The special thing is that the Subhendu Adhikari-led BJP government in West Bengal has already announced that ISKCON will help in cooking and distributing food under the mid-day meal scheme in schools of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) area.

Following the move, the opposition accused the government of depriving children of nutrition by trying to impose vegetarianism in schools. ISKCON In the new menu, plant-based protein sources will be used instead of eggs. It has advised to use paneer and kidney beans instead of eggs in the current mid-day meal menu.

Das had also responded to the media, on behalf of ISKCON, to the state government's decision to engage the organization to distribute cooked vegetarian mid-day meals in state-sponsored and state-aided schools.

Raised voice in favor of vegetarianism

Radharaman Das had said: Although there will be no eggs in our food, there will be no deficiency in nutrition. We will compensate for this by serving things like paneer, rajma and soybean along with khichdi.

He was quoted as saying, "The founder of ISKCON, Acharya Prabhupada, was also a Bengali, who spread the spirit of Krishna consciousness throughout the world. Today, through ISKCON, there are 8 crore vegetarians around the world and they are very happy and healthy." Responding to claims and concerns over nutritional value, Radharaman Das rejected the misinformation and said that vegetarian food contains as much or more protein than eggs.

On the other hand, in a social media post after his removal from ISKCON, Das has clarified the reasons for his removal from all posts in ISKCON.

He said on X, I would like to tell all the well-wishers, devotees, members of the media and the general public that I have been relieved of all my responsibilities within ISKCON. I have also been directed not to represent or speak on behalf of ISKCON before the media, government officials or any public forum. He told, the action against me is mainly related to these matters.

He said that I respect the decisions taken by the concerned authorities and will fully follow all the instructions given to me. He said that now I will not communicate with the media on these subjects nor will I make any public statement. I humbly request journalists and media organizations to respect my position and refrain from contacting me for comments or interviews. I am deeply grateful to everyone for the love, trust and support that I have received over the years. I pray that ISKCON continues to move forward on the path of progress and success.
