Manchester United have firmly dismissed speculation suggesting that their move to sign Atalanta midfielder Ederson has fallen through, confirming that the Brazilian is still on course to finalise his transfer to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils remain confident of completing the deal soon, despite recent reports over the weekend that sparked anxiety among fans over an apparent delay in the official announcement.
According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United plan to conduct a thorough medical examination of Ederson before officially sealing his £39 million transfer. The agreement includes a guaranteed payment of £35 million, with an additional £3.8 million in performance-related bonuses. Atalanta have accepted the full package, and personal terms between the player and United were settled several weeks ago.
Concerns among supporters grew after social media rumours on Sunday night suggested that negotiations had collapsed. The confusion largely arose due to the absence of an official statement from the club.
However, United sources clarified that the original plan was always to wrap up the paperwork in early July. Those plans were unexpectedly disrupted when Ederson received a late call-up to Brazil’s World Cup squad as a replacement for injured Roma defender Wesley.
As a result, the midfielder had to travel to the United States with his national team before completing the final formalities in England.
The wait for the 26-year-old, who turns 27 on Tuesday, appears to be nearly over. Although he previously underwent an initial medical assessment while abroad, United’s medical team have requested a more extensive evaluation at Carrington before finalising the transfer.
The final logistical obstacle was removed on Sunday night when Brazil were knocked out of the World Cup in the Round of 16, losing 2-1 to Erling Haaland’s efficient Norway side.
With Brazil’s tournament now over, Ederson is expected to arrive in Manchester in the coming days to complete his medical checks, sign the remaining documents, and be officially presented as Michael Carrick’s latest summer acquisition.
