After winning the China Open on Sunday, US tennis star and US Open winner Coco Gauff shared her satisfaction, praising the struggle that she saw throughout the tournament.

Gauff defeated Karolina Muchova 6-1, 6-3 in Sunday’s China Open championship match thanks to a brilliant performance. The US Open winner from the previous year overcame her recent forehand and serve problems to earn an impressive victory—her first since splitting with coach Brad Gilbert.

Gauff posted on Instagram, saying, “I’m proud of the fight I put forth over the last two weeks in Beijing and am very appreciative of winning the @chinaopen championship. I appreciate all of your kindness and encouragement. The title is #Histimingisperfect.

This is Gauff’s second overall Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) 1000 victory and her first since January’s Auckland crown, in which she again defeated Muchova in the championship match.

With an ace, Gauff got off to a solid start on serve. However, Muchova looked uneasy and mishandled her opening serve, allowing the fourth-seeded American player to convert a third-break opportunity and take a 2-0 lead.

After defeating local favorite Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals, the Czech star faltered, failing to earn a point in her following two matchups and losing to a rampaging Gauff team that grabbed a 5-1 lead. In the seventh game, she did manage to exert some pressure on Gauff’s serve, but with just thirty minutes remaining, the Atlanta native converted her third set point.

Set two began with Muchova, the unseeded player, playing some good tennis and holding serve with ease. Gauff was making double errors, and her opponent got the first break with a high backhand volley on the third try.

Gauff almost won four games in a row as he maintained his lead in the baseline duel. Muchova’s backhand long put an end to Gauff’s seventh WTA Tour victory, which she had earned with some beautiful, acrobatic pursuing drop shots.

Gauff is now the only player to win the China Open twice, following Serena Williams in 2004 and 2013. She is now traveling to Wuhan for the year’s last WTA 1000 match.
