Support for the popular messaging app WhatsApp is going to end for many smartphones from January 1, 2025. WhatsApp's parent company Meta has said that WhatsApp will not work on Android devices that run on KitKat OS or older versions from the new year. WhatsApp takes such steps every year so that the security and functionality of the app continue to work better with new technologies. It is worth noting here that Android KitKat was introduced in the year 2013. This means that WhatsApp support is going to end in very old smartphones. It will continue to work as before in normal devices.

The company says that older Android versions often do not have the capabilities required to support new updates of the app. This creates security threats and also affects functionality. After this decision, WhatsApp support will affect the models of many brands. Especially smartphones of Samsung, LG, Sony, etc. LG has even exited the smartphone business.

WhatsApp will not work on these phones
Samsung : Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy S3, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy Ace 3
LG : LG Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
Motorola : Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
HTC : One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
Sony : Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

This move of WhatsApp is also going to affect Apple users. The company has said that from May 5, 2025, it will not support iPhones running on iOS versions before 15.1. The company is giving its users 5 months time so that they can switch to the updated iOS versions. This will affect those users who are using iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus. Those iPhone users whose devices is still running on the old software will have to upgrade to the new version.
