Sullia: A woman died of rabies after being bitten by a dog in Sampaje a month ago.
The 42-year-old woman, a resident near Kallugundi in Sampaje, was bitten by a stray puppy on February 7 while working in a plantation in Aranthodu. However, she did not inform anyone or seek medical attention.
On Monday, she developed severe abdominal pain and visited Sullia Government Hospital. She displayed unusual behavior, including a fear of water. When questioned by doctors, she revealed the dog bite incident. She was then shifted to a hospital in Mangaluru for advanced treatment. However, she succumbed on March 20.
Rabies confirmed:
Medical reports confirmed that she had contracted rabies. As a precaution, authorities have administered anti-rabies vaccines to several people in her locality and family, according to Taluk Health Officer Dr. Nandakumar.
The deceased woman is survived by her husband, two sons, and a daughter.
Concerns over more victims:
The same puppy is suspected to have bitten others in Aranthodu. However, its current whereabouts remain unknown. Health officials have urged anyone bitten by a dog to get vaccinated immediately.
